The holiday season is fast approaching and with that comes family gatherings, festive outings and holiday travel. It can be a testing time for all involved but for children going between two homes it can be even more challenging.
We have compiled some tips for co- parenting families to consider whilst they navigate this holiday season:
1. Communication- this is key when the children are passing between homes. Communicate plans for festive outings and try where possible to spread out the festive treats between the two home. Eg don’t book a trip to see a popular figure on the same day/ weekend. Spread the fun for the children! Communicate early and this also should include communication regarding gifts.
2. Christmas Day is only a day- carefully consider is it worth the hassle and disruption for children going between two homes/ families. Is it better to alternate the day on a yearly basis so the children can enjoy themselves fully. Put the children first.
3. Be flexible with arrangements, traffic is heavier during the holiday season. If handovers take place a little bit later, go with the flow. Is it really worth cross words being exchanged.
4. Respect values and traditions- every family has their own holiday traditions. There is room for all to be included.
Whilst it is a difficult season to navigate it can be done successfully with a little thought, respect and putting the children’s needs first.
