Roadside tips for a Road Traffic Collision

Being in a road traffic collision is something that we all hope to avoid, but unfortunately accidents do happen.  According to the PSNI’s Annual Report 2022/23 on Police Recorded Injury Road Traffic Collisions and Causalities “There was a total of 5,057 injury road traffic collisions recorded, resulting in 61 fatalities, 874 people seriously injured and 6,904 slightly injured.”

Being in an accident can be distressing and worrying so it is important to try and remember these roadside tips:

Ensure that you and any passengers are safe.

Call the PSNI to report the accident and request an ambulance for anyone that is injured.

Exchange details with any other drivers involved.

You should make a note of the following:

  • Driver’s name, address, contact details and insurance details
  • Make, model and colour of any vehicles involved
  • The registration number of any vehicles involved
  • Any witnesses or passenger details
  • If you can, take photographs of the scene and the vehicles involved.

It is very important that you report the accident to your insurance company as soon as you are able, even if the accident was not your fault.

If you have been injured, you should seek medical advice from your GP or local hospital if appropriate.
