The Belfast Health and Social Care Trust today announced its intention to recall 2500 patients following an independent review of the notes and records of patients treated by Dr Michael Watt, Consultant Neurologist.
It is understood that the widespread recall of patients has arisen following a review of patients treated by Dr Watt after a GP raised concerns regarding the care provided by Dr Watt to a patient. This review involved both the Belfast Trust and Royal College of Physicians.
The Belfast Trust have advised that the large number of patients being recalled is to assure patients that they are receiving the best treatment. It is anticipated that the patients will be recalled within the next 12 weeks. Additional clinics have been set up to handle the volume of patients as well as an advice helpline for those affected and anxious about the recall.
The Belfast Trust have confirmed that Dr Watt is not currently treating patients but is still an employee of the Trust.
