New compulsory Landlord Registration Scheme in Northern Ireland from 25th February 2014
A new Landlord Registration Scheme comes in to force in Northern Ireland on 25 February 2014.
From that date, all private landlords of residential property must register under the Scheme.
The Scheme provides for a centrally held register of private landlords which will allow tenants, neighbours and local councils to identify if landlords are registered. It will provide information on the number of landlords in Northern Ireland and also allow landlords to receive updates on the rights and duties of landlords and tenants.
Registrations online will commence from 25 February 2014 and the purpose of the information provided is as follows: to issue the Certificate of Registration; to notify about expiry of a landlord’s current registration; to disclose to searchers if a landlord is registered; to process payments; to allow district councils, the Department of Finance and Personnel and the Northern Ireland Housing Executive to carry out their legal duties.
Further details of the Scheme are set out on the government website www.nidirect.gov.uk/landlord-registration-scheme which will host the online registration portal. And of course you can get in touch with Worthingtons Solicitors who will be able to advise you on the operation of the Scheme and Landlord's duties and obligations.
